# Upgrade xNIC on Windows

**WHAT TO EXPECT**

When a cloudSwXtch has been updated, the connected xNICs and swxtchBridges must be manually updated as well.

**In this article,** users will learn how to upgrade their xNIC.

## Upgrading Windows xNIC

24/7 Operations

If the services need to be up and running 24/7, swXtch.io suggests that redundant systems exist, which will be referred to as "Main" and "Backup". During an upgrade, the Backup system should be upgraded, then the traffic should be routed to the Backup while the Main is upgraded.

There is no special procedure to upgrade an xNIC. The new version must be installed over the old one, as the installation script will handle the procedure, first uninstalling the old version, then installing the new one.

> [!WARNING]
> **PLEASE NOTE**
>
> If the xNIC has a special configuration stored, users must use the `--persist` argument in the command line of the install script.

In order to upgrade, see the [Install xNIC on Windows](/v2/docs/install-xnic-windows) page and run the same command used to install.
